The inaugural Steel Guitar Sunday on July 6 kicked off the 2025 Waikīkī Steel Guitar Festival. Brazil's Johnny Crash joined us for a few songs on his steel. General manager Michelle Whitton was pleased with the turnout and hopes to add more Sundays each month in the future.

The week kicked off on Sunday, July 6, at the Hula Grill with its inaugural Steel Guitar Sunday, followed by one-hour evening performances Monday through Thursday featuring Alan Akaka & the Islanders, Mālie Lyman, Masami Sato & Makana from Japan, and the NextGEN.

On Friday, our guests from Japan enjoyed a welcome breakfast hosted by Hula Grill Waikiki, followed by the livestreamed Japan Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival. Featured were Michiyo Fujita and Yoshiko Yokoyama, Yukio Katagiri, Paul Okubo, Shinichi and Kumiko Kakiuchi, Matt Kobayashi, Lion Kobayashi, and Masami Sato & Makana. The guest emcee was Masami Sato.
The Saturday Ho‘olaule‘a featured Steve Cheney, Geronimo Valdriz, Greg Sardinha & Po‘okela, Christo Ruppenthal, Lion Kobayashi, Makana, Bobby Ingano, Malie Lyman, and me. Our guest emcee was Kimo Kahoano.

Concert promoter Patrick Landeza of the Bay Area offered me the opportunity to feature the steel guitar in two shows, one in Castro Valley and the other at the Cue in Concord. I invited steel artists and former students Mikiya Matsuda and Justin Firmeza to join me, along with guitarist Vic Wong, who is also a steel guitarist. 13-year old Kyle Henderson of San Jose kicked off each evening show with "Hilo March", not missing a beat or a note.

When Kyle said he had been taking lessons for six months, the audience was stunned. He then played "Haole Hula" and finished off with "Beyond the Reef". Justin played a few songs on his steel, followed by Mikiya, who did an interesting rendition of "China Boy", a song recorded by Sol K. Bright and the Hollywaiians. When not on the steel, Justin played the ‘ukulele and Mikiya played an upright bass. My set was more of a kanikapila, with everyone taking turns doing a pa‘ani. It was a blast! Patrick wants me to come twice a year to do more steel guitar concerts. How could I turn him down?

Coming to Cupertino on Sunday, September 28, at the Odd Fellows Lodge, with day-long workshops, a mini concert, and an evening potluck and kani ka pila.
