Linda and I had the privilege to visit this Kamehameha School to present the history of, play the steel guitar and let students have a hands-on experience.
We met teachers Kalei Aarona-Lorenzo and Clark Tuitele who showed us to their music room. They were excited for us to present the history of Joseph Kekuku and the steel guitar to them and the students.
The school is on the slopes of Haleakalā and the view was spectacular, and facilities very nice. This day that we visited was pajama day so all the students and some of the teachers wore PJs to school, very cute.

There were 2 sessions with about 40 students in each class. First class was 1st and 4th grade, second had 2nd and 5th graders with 4 high school students. Both classes were very attentive with much interest. They asked very probative questions, were very polite and a joy to present to. They sat on rugs and when doing the hands-on the students were very excited and thankful for the experience.
At the end of each class they sang a song to us showing their appreciation. Two of the high school students came up for the hands-on where I showed them how to read the tabs and play. They really seemed to enjoy it as well.
We presented the school with a Joseph Kekuku replica Steel Guitar which they were very grateful to receive. One of the teachers had a Rogue steel which she said she wanted to learn how to play.

Clark took many pictures/video of how I held the picks and bar and techniques of how I played while they provided lunch and we ate together.
Like in other schools that we visited, when asked who would like to learn to play the Hawaiian Steel Guitar most hands went up. Seems there is a need that needs to be fulfilled somehow to have a teacher available.
